I’m sure everyone is very worried about my dishwasher, so here’s the update:
Recently, my dishwasher went crazy and started randomly melting everything plastic. I called the company, Frigidaire, and found that it was out of warranty (TWO YEARS OLD) and they weren’t going to do squat about it. I asked to speak to a manager, and after waiting on hold for quite a while, the poor rep I was bitching at told me they had authorized her to pay for the parts to fix it, but not the labor.
They probably already knew what was wrong with it.
Anyway, I called the guy they recommended, Appliance Service Specialists here in K.C., 816-217-1030, and this very young man came to fix it. This guy knew his stuff (he’s been fixing appliances with his dad since he was 11): Before he even came to the house, he said in his experience this problem was caused by some wiring getting caught in the spring that lifts and lowers the dishwasher door. Every time you open the door, the spring pulls the wires until they detach from the vent/fan thingy on the top of the dishwasher, the heat doesn’t get vented out of the box, and everything melts.
And he was right:
This is the side of the dishwasher after it had been pulled out of the cabinet. (I’m a geek, so I find this fascinating. I assume everyone else will as well.) That spring is attached to the door. The wire goes up the side of the dishwasher and plugs into the vent at the top of the unit. It was originally taped to the side of the dishwasher, but what happens to tape after two years of steam and moisture? That’s right, it becomes completely non-sticky plastic, and the wires droop down into the spring.
So the weird thing is, if this is a common problem, WHY does Frigidaire put the stupid wire there? Here’s how it looks now:
And no parts were needed, so Frigidaire didn’t have to pay a dime. I, on the other hand, had to pay $90 in labor to have this stupid design fixed. Honestly, is design really that hard that they couldn’t foresee this problem occurring? And now that they know, and I’m sure they know, because God knows this young whippersnapper dishwashing repair genius sure does, why don’t they change how they put the stupid thing together?
Which leads me to the Friday Rant … See you tomorrow.
