Adult Book Reviews: (Books I’ve Edited) Resolution by John Blackport

I edited a book I really enjoyed the other day. It’s called Resolution, and it’s the sequel to a book I haven’t read yet, but intend to, called Raingun. I didn’t edit Raingun, but the writing with Resolution was really good, so I expect Raingun to be as well. He’s also almost done with the third book in the series. At first I thought it was about the American revolution, until I realized he was riding a horse made of smoke and casting spells. It’s set in a world where magic and zombies and wizards are the norm. The unusual aspect of the book is that people are born with multiple lives, like a cat, and are almost immediately reborn after dying, unless they’ve used up all their lives. Not the usual thing I read, but I really enjoyed it. Definitely not just a guy book (though aparently the first book has more sex — not for kids!). If you’re a sci-fi fan or you like fantasy with sword fights and spells, you should give it a try. Rick Rivoire is flush with money, women, and prospects. He protects his country as one of the Rainguns, an elite regiment of spellcasting cavalry. But the national policy drifts further and further into slavery and religious persecution, sparking rebellion. Joining the rebels could land Rick on a prison ship, in slave-irons — or atop the same gallows where he watched his father hang. The alternative looks no brighter. The status quo imperils Rick’s hard-won self-respect. Supporting tyranny would doom his dream to emulate the valiant swordswoman who braved a den of monsters to rescue the lonely, terrified nine-year-old boy he once was.Rick can’t stay above the fray forever. He must either defend an aristocracy whose actions disgust him — or risk everything he has.
